I recently saw a YouTube video of someone talking about Visual Studio Code being released by Microsoft and that it was a free and lightweight IDE. For the past few years I've been using Atom and I've loved it.

Today I finally tried it out. While I don't agree with some of the design choices for handling files in the editor, I do like that Microsoft gave us the ability to use a CLI directly in the editor. It gives the normal options you would expect like the old school Command Prompt and PowerShell, but it also detected my Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) setup as well as the Git Bash executable! I really like WSL and I think that I can use Bash without my awkward gnome-terminal setup is phenomenal!

Just wanted to share. It's cool stuff that I don't think I would have stumbled upon except by coincidence. I don't think Microsoft is really pushing it super hard.

Edit: Also that debugger! Really lovin' it.

I've always been a but on the fence about them, but stuck with it because c# is my favorite language, but I'm finding it more and more difficult not to like the direction they're going.

igknighted:

Businesswise, they have to do this stuff to succeed. If they didn't, I'm sure things would just be terrible for the company.

dan_82:

I'm grateful that VScode is opensource. After all, companies change minds as easy as changing CEOs.
Never forget Ballmer's approach to Linux.

Is that fixed?
