Hi all,

I'm trying to get a community of Gophers off the ground in Perth, Australia. From what I can tell Go developers are fairly underrepresented here, but I'm hoping to get enough interest to at least organise a monthly or bi-monthly catch up to discuss ideas, create a local network & maybe even foster collaboration.

I've also started a Slack Team: http://perthgophers.club (invite code is "iamagopher")

It may come to nothing, this is a small city with not a lot of software development in general. So if you're out there in Perth, join up. Whether you're a noob or better than Rob Pike himself, everyone's welcome.

I started the Brisbane Gophers (see http://www.meetup.com/Brisbane-Golang-Meetup/) . At present, we meet every 2 months. We've been getting a reasonable turn out, and the speakers have been great.

Pop in if you're ever in Brisbane!

OccamsMirror:

That's awesome! Got any tips for getting the community started?

Did Meetup.com help? I must admit I balked at paying $15USD, as with Facebook I can spend that on advertising and theoretically push it out to people that might be interested. Although in practise I seem to getting more fake likes than anything else.

112 members is pretty impressive.

How did you proceed when you were first getting off the ground? How did you go about getting speakers & engaging your Meetup? I'm a bit lost, all I know is that I want a community, to be perfectly honest I don't quite know where to start.

scottjbarr:

It was pretty easy, actually. I created the meetup.com group, and those that are interested found it. One of the benefits of meetup.com is that the "meetup" community will find you. Once I hit passed the "free" level for members I had to start paying the for the group, but it is well worth it. Basically I pay money to meetup.com instead of paying for Facebook advertising (I don't use FB anyway)

Getting speakers is hard to start with, especially for a small community, but it gets better. The last meetup had the highest number of volunteer speakers to date. Just be very prepared to present something yourself to start off with :)

As for hosting, ask your local working spaces if they would be interested in having your group there. There may be a few companies around that have an interest in Go as well.

OccamsMirror:

Thanks for the response. :)

Your meetup already inspired me to start my own: http://www.meetup.com/perth-golang-meetup/

Annoyingly, there is no free tier on Meetup.com anymore, but luckily I got it for half price for the year. So that's nice.

Thankfully I'm good for space, I've got a good connection at one of the Tech coworking spaces here, and if that was to fall through I have my own office & boardroom to use as well.

Thanks again for responding, it was cool seeing someone else do exactly what I'm trying to do. And it not being Sydney or Melbourne makes me feel like it's definitely possible here too.
